Artificial Intelligence + Digital Automation vs. Human Project Management 

Artificial Intelligence (Al) 

Advancing in problem solving through learning, Al has already been with us, but today rather specialized in certain functions and not in full capacity yet. We do not know every aspect of what Al will bring in the future, but we have to accept that Al will be able to act as project manager and handle all or most of the project management and translating tasks sooner or later in the future. Probably in 10 years or less. Almost all of us will be out. 

Digital Automation (DA)

Before Al, we have seen software eliminating repititive tasks in project management. Actually, project management software and TM-based translation tools are just another example to automation. It started with stand alone applications and then evolved to cloud based applications today. In time, automation possibilities have been included in the software with more clever solutions while leaving many people jobless standing in between somewhere.

Last generation: Al + DA

The latest trend is the Intensified Digital Automation powered by Artificial Intelligence. Neural machine translation integrated cat tools is an example. Or, project management platforms integrated with CAT tools with neural machine translation.

Human Project Management 

Despite incredible advances in Al and DA, for today, human intervention is indispensable. In the project management, translation output has to be incorporated to the purpose of clients through deep analysis (reading) of the source materials and communication with clients. In the translation, output received from neural machine engine must be post edited by human editors.

Conclusion

Technology is booming and translation industry will be heavily effected out of AL and DA combinations. However, adaptation of people to the new conditions will be slower than technological booming. Language service providers and professional translators will remain as important actor in the market at least for around another 10 years.
